Mathias Hellriegel, PhD, LL.M.


is a Berlin-based lawyer. He advises both German and international clients on all questions of public economic law, with an emphasis on environmental and public planning law and regulated markets. His practice is focused in particular on supporting clients throughout the course of project implementation, carrying out licensing and authorization procedures for construction and infrastructural projects, and providing counsel on corporate and real estate transactions and questions of construction, environmental and state aid law. He also advises both public-sector institutions and private companies on privatizations and public-private partnerships.
After completing his legal education at the Universities of Freiburg and Lausanne, Dr. Hellriegel started his career as a research associate with Prof. Dr. Michael Kloepfer at the Humboldt University in Berlin and in the Association of Berlin Scientists. In 2001, he completed his doctoral thesis entitled "Mediation in Environmental Law", receiving his doctorate in law (Dr. iur.) from the Humboldt University in Berlin. In 2006, Dr. Hellriegel obtained the further qualification as certified specialist (Fachanwalt) for administrative law. Also in 2006, he completed his master’s degree in law (LL.M.) at Nottingham Trent University in the field of environmental, planning and regulatory law. Dr. Hellriegel lectures at the IREBS Real Estate Academy of the University of Regensburg and at Humboldt University of Berlin.
From October 2002 to January 2007, Dr. Hellriegel worked in the Berlin office of the legal firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. He has been a member of the legal firm since February 2007.
